Notes from Mrs. Barnard
Happy Friday! One week down, lots of learning left to do! Let’s look at what we covered this week.
Reading- We worked with context clues all week. Context clues are hints authors give to help us figure out unknown words. For example: We read a story about a fly at a picnic and he was tired of eating decayed food. We had to use our context clues to figure out what was a good example of decaying food. The sentence from the story said “He no longer wanted decayed food from the trash.” Since the story mentioned “trash”, we know we throw out squishy apples, but we wouldn’t throw away fresh eggs, crispy lettuce or blooming flowers. Trash helped us figure out the word decayed. We can also use our prior knowledge or own experiences to help. There will be a CONTEXT CLUES test on Monday. They have a review sheet that we did in class today in their green folder.
Math-We worked on place value, ways to write numbers (standard, expanded and word form), comparing numbers and ordering numbers. We are rocketing forward in addition facts! Please remember to help your child study each night with the papers they bring home in their blue folder.
Language-We have worked with subjects, predicates and types of sentences. BrainPop and BrainPop Jr. videos have offered us many laughs while learning about these topics. We can now write declarative (statements), imperative (commands), exclamatory (shows emotion!) and interrogative (questions) sentences correctly.
Some books we have read this week are Library Mouse and Do Not Open this Book!. We used these books when talking about different book genres and also to show how authors use different types of sentences when they write. As you are reading with your child at night, be on the look-out for different punctuation marks and also ask them what genre their book is from. These are just small ways to reinforce our lessons at school.
I forgot to mention that we also read the book Miss Malarkey Leave No Reader Behind last week.
Tonight we are sending home a note about Grandparents Day, which is September 7th. Please check your child’s green folder for this important announcement!
Please remember to send any forgotten paperwork back to school with your child. If you haven’t sent in assignment book money, please do that at your convenience.
Pinto Football starts tonight! Everyone enjoys a good Pinto game!
We are off to a great start. I am happy to be back in my hometown, doing what I love. Please feel free to shoot me an email or send a note if you have any questions or concerns. I will be happy to visit with you anytime.
Have a SPLENDID weekend!
