Weekly Notes-Aug 27-31

Notes from Mrs. Barnard
Hooray for rain!  I don’t even think the kids cared that we had inside recess today!

Let’s take a look at our week.  It has been B-U-S-Y!  You should see our room.  The walls are COVERED with anchor charts for us to look at for help during the year. (You'll see a few at the bottom of this post!)

Reading-We have worked on making connections while reading.  In order to do this we have to know that “Reading is Thinking”.  There are three connections that all readers can make while reading.
·       Text-to-Text:  When the book reminds the reader of another book they have read
·       Text-to-Self:  When the book reminds the reader of themselves
·       Text-to-World:  When the book reminds the reader of something happening (or that happened) in the world around them.
Along with this, we have focused on that while we read we should have thoughts about the story.  Next week we will begin thought cards during reading time, where students can write down their thoughts as they read.  We practiced as a class this week.  Next week we will do some “partner thinking” as well as individual thinking.
Writing-In language the students have been learning all about how to write a paragraph.  A paragraph includes two thingsa topic sentence and detail sentences.  After working all week on identifying the topic sentence and writing supporting details, but leaving out details that do not support the topic, they got a chance to do some free writing.  They chose a topic and had to write a sentence about it in blue.  Then they had to write three supporting details in red.  I enjoyed getting another glimpse into what they like to write about on their own.
Math-We have worked all week on problem solving skills when we have a word problem.  For me, as a student, I did not like word problems.  I could read just fineit was all the extra information and where to start to find my answer that got me stuck.  Hopefully this week has given your kids a clearer picture of how to tackle these sneaky problems.
Books we read this week during our lessons are: Two Bobbies, Never Spit on Your Shoes, The Man Who Walked Between the Towers, Chrysanthemum, Stand Tall Molly Lou Melon and How I Spent My Summer Vacation.  I may have missed some because like I said, we’ve been busy reading and thinking!
Reminders:
·       Pinto Football has been moved up to 5:30 tonight due to the amount of rain we are to receive!
·       Grandparent’s Day is Friday, September 7th.  If you haven’t sent in your note or money, please do so on WEDNESDAY.  Grandparents may start arriving at 9:30.  They can bring a memory or something special to share about themselves.
·       Monday is Labor Day!
·       No School Monday or Tuesday!
·       September 28th is Homecoming.  We will get out early that day.
Thank you so much for investing time in your child’s education!  I see the time it takes out of your evening to help them with homework, to study Rocket Math and even to sign their planner every night.  These efforts do not go unnoticed!!!
Have a WONDERFUL four day weekend!
